I use random numbers frequently, but many (most?) random number generators have at least some small amount of bias. In other words, one generator may tend to give more high numbers than low numbers, or vice versa. One way to get around that, if you want to choose one out of N objects is to pick N random numbers using the same random number generator (remembering which order those came in), and select either the highest or the lowest of those... and find where that random was in the sequence. It helps to use a spreadsheet to remember all N random numbers along with their sequence numbers.
